Gina Rinehart and Hancock prospecting will award $1,272,500 in bonuses to Australia’s swimmers and para swimmers who won medals in Glasgow.

A record 37 gold medals were won by Australia’s swim team, with an additional 21 silver medals and 23 bronze also collected by those in the green and gold.

Athletes will receive a bonus for every medal that they earned, with payments set to hit their bank accounts within two weeks of the closing ceremony ending.

Those who won gold medals in individual events will receive $20,000 while the gold-medal relay teams will earn $5000 per person.

For silver, it is a $15,000 bonus for individual events and $3,750 per person in the relays. Bronze medallists will earn a $10,000 bonus for individual events.

Those sums see athletes like Australia’s Meg Harris, who won six gold medals (four relays and two individual) collect a $60,000 bonus.

“I’m pleased to be able once again to provide financial rewards to our medal winners in the sports where I’m Patron,” Rinehart said in a statement.

“It’s a way of saying thank you and showing appreciation for their dedication and achievements, the pride they make Australians feel, right across our country, and for being the inspiring young ambassadors that they truly are.”
