Australia Day celebrations lit up the skies above Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River), with more than 150,000 revellers across the City enjoying a spectacular fireworks and drone display as part of Hancock Prospecting Australia Day.

City of Perth Lord Mayor Bruce Reynolds said 26 January was a time for the community to come together to reflect, respect and celebrate, with the diverse program of riverfront events creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere throughout the day.

“Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and our City’s multicultural communities were celebrated in the diverse Multicultural Zone through performances, stalls and hands-on arts and crafts workshops, alongside family-friendly entertainment and rides throughout Langley Park.”

While Langley Park offered the best views of the evening’s light show, crowds also gathered at vantage points around Derbarl Yerrigan, including Kings Park, South Perth and apartments along Terrace Road and Elizabeth Quay.

“Thank you to the crowds who attended for being so respectful and well-behaved, helping to create a safe and welcoming, family-friendly event,” Mr Reynolds said.

“And of course, thank you to our Principal Partner, Hancock Prospecting, for partnering with the City of Perth to deliver such a successful Australia Day celebration.”

The event was also supported by the Australian Government through the Australia Day Council.

Earlier in the day, the City of Perth welcomed 70 new Australian citizens from countries across the world at the Australia Day Citizenship and Awards Ceremony.

“It was wonderful to see such a diverse group of people becoming new Australian citizens at our iconic Perth Town Hall,” Mr Reynolds said.

“We’re proud that so many people have chosen to make the City of Light their home.”

The Ceremony also saw the City honour local heroes through the Community Citizen of the Year Awards, recognising those who have positively and selflessly contributed to the Perth community this year:

  • Citizen of the Year – Michael Felix
  • Youth Citizen of the Year – Zac Cawdron
  • Senior Community Citizen of the Year – Barbara Harris
  • Active Citizenship (group or event) – Friends of Kings Park
  • City of Light Champion – City of Perth Western Residents (COPWR).

While Australia Day celebrations have wrapped up, the summer fun continues across the City. Summer Series at Elizabeth Quay runs until 22 February, featuring live music, dance parties and movies, while FRINGE WORLD continues to paint the City pink across venues until 15 February. Food lovers can also enjoy the Twilight Food Markets in Forrest Place every Friday night.
